The workshop begins at pace with all participants being invited to engage at a personal level as early as possible. Letting the person arrive is key facet of any Lindsay McKenna workshop and the importance to see, experience and understand this is of paramount importance to a potential coach.

The golden thread

Coaching can come in many different forms, for many different reasons and in some cases even from many different people. If a standard approach is not adopted this can lead to confusion, resentment and less productive coaching meetings. Participants are introduced to the concept of the "Golden Thread" which provides a solid baseline for all coaching activities.

The workshop then moves into the different forms of coaching using this as a constant theme.

Exploring the golden thread

The key constituents of the golden thread are broken down with each one reviewed and practical support provided. These essential capabilities form the backbone of coaching and when used as a methodology within an organisation can offer a secure route for individual development.

  • Agreeing the purpose and process - How to create the all important contract that forms the back bone of any coaching relationship.
  • Agreeing confidentiality - Confidentiality provides security and is a cornerstone of the trust in the relationship.
  • Establishing safety & boundaries - Important for both parties, this often overlooked aspect of coaching is essential.
  • Rapport building - How to build rapport (and how to recognise it's absence) is the oil on the gears of any relationship.
  • Crew questions - Structured questions help structure answers it's as simple as that - but how?
  • Questioning and listening - It comes as a big shock to some that listening does not just mean "stop talking".
  • Suspending your "self" - Coaching another person means breaking out of the pressures of self and having the courage to move beyond "me".
  • Exposing limiting assumptions - Fact free planning is not good basis for any development activity. It is amazing how often an assumption can become fact.
  • Reviewing progress - Progress can be so much easier when it is measured in way that both parties can easily see and understand.
  • Moving on - The process of closing down the coaching relationship should be thought of fairly early on with the relationship and its benefits not being allowed to "dribble" out of existence.

Goal achievement

This form of coaching requires the coach to have a full understanding of goals and milestone setting strongly supported by a keen grasp of monitoring techniques.

Coaching for motivation

This section of the workshop looks at the subject of personal drivers and motivation. There is also coverage of reward techniques and how to use questioning to understand underlying personal needs.

Coaching self confidence

A coach needs to understand the origin of any negative beliefs which could prevent someone reaching their goals. A short but essential session that takes a critical look at the process of examining personal values, and the skills of drawing out blockages through story telling.

Coaching in emotional situations

Coaching can often lead participants into the emotional arena and participants are given the opportunity to review emotions and their effects. A good coach uses empathy not sympathy and has the skill of drawing out the emotion without it igniting into a destructive firestorm.

Workshop to workplace

This session reinforces some key points from the workshop as participants are tasked to clarify their intent and key actions post workshop - detailing what they intend to transfer into the workplace, how, by when and with what desired result.
